Kashgar is a historic city located in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. It was a major hub on the Silk Road connecting China with Central Asia and beyond. The city is famous for its cultural diversity; old bazaars; mosques; and traditional Uyghur architecture. Because of its location; Kashgar became a melting pot of Islamic; Buddhist; Persian; and Chinese influences. In modern times it remains strategically important under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
