After World War Two Germany was divided into four occupation zones controlled by the United States the Soviet Union the United Kingdom and France. This system of administration lasted until 1952 in West Germany when partial sovereignty was restored under agreements signed with Western powers. East Germany remained under Soviet influence for decades. The period of occupation shaped the global order and created the divide between Western and Eastern blocs. Berlin became the most visible symbol of this conflict which later intensified with the construction of the Berlin Wall.
