The Durand Line was established in 1893 as the boundary between British India and Afghanistan. It is now the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The line was named after Sir Mortimer Durand who negotiated it. It divided tribal Pashtun areas and remains a source of tension because Afghanistan has often refused to formally recognize it as an international border. Today it influences trade migration and security between the two countries.
