Pakistan withdrew from CENTO in 1979 after the Iranian Revolution and changing international conditions weakened the alliance. CENTO also known as the Baghdad Pact was created in 1955 to contain Soviet expansion. However it did not provide effective military support to Pakistan during wars with India. Pakistan’s withdrawal signaled its shift toward new alliances with China and Muslim countries.
