A: Delhi
B: Mumbai
C: Hyderabad
D: Agra

In 1911 the British government shifted the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi. The announcement was made by King George V at the Delhi Durbar. Delhi was selected because of its central location and its historic role as the seat of earlier empires. The change reduced the importance of Bengal where nationalist movements were strong. Delhi remained the capital during the rest of British rule and it is still the capital of modern India today.
