The Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 with the World Bank as mediator. The treaty allocated the three eastern rivers Ravi Beas and Sutlej to India and the three western rivers Indus Jhelum and Chenab to Pakistan. It enabled Pakistan to build major dams including Mangla and Tarbela. Despite wars and hostilities the treaty has survived making it one of the most durable international water sharing agreements.
