After the First Anglo Sikh War the Treaty of Amritsar was signed in 1846. Under this treaty the British sold Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh of the Dogra dynasty for seventy five lakh rupees. This deal made Gulab Singh the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. His family continued to rule the state until 1947. The sale of Kashmir became controversial and is one of the key reasons behind the long standing Kashmir dispute in South Asia.
