The British sold Kashmir to Gulab Singh for a payment of
A: 45 Lacks
B: 55 Lacks
C: 65 Lacks
D: 75 Lacks
The Treaty of Amritsar signed in 1846 transferred Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh after the First Anglo Sikh War. Under this treaty he paid seventy five lakh Nanakshahee rupees to the British East India Company in return for sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir. This marked the beginning of Dogra rule which lasted until 1947. The agreement is considered controversial because it treated the territory as a sale rather than reflecting the will of its people. The correct figure was 75 Lacks therefore option D is the right selection.
