Karachi was chosen as the first capital of Pakistan in 1947. It was a natural choice because it already had a major port and infrastructure to run a new state. It connected Pakistan with the outside world through sea trade routes and air links. Karachi remained the capital until 1959 when Islamabad was selected due to its central location and better security. Even after losing capital status Karachi continued to grow as the largest city and became the economic and industrial heart of the country.
