Which present state covers most of the former Sassanid realm

The Sassanid Empire was the last pre Islamic Persian power. Its capitals and core provinces stood in regions that now lie inside Iran. The dynasty ruled wide borderlands at times yet the cultural and political heart remained Persian. Therefore the modern country that best maps to that historic core is Iran.
